Description:
The Innsbruck Festival of Ancient Music took place in August 2020, during the pandemic of the new corona infection (COVID-19). The program prepared to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth was a concert-style performance of Paale's "Leonora. Paale was an Italian composer born in 1771, the same generation as Beethoven. The plot of "Leonora" (1804), in which a faithful wife rescues her wrongfully imprisoned husband from a dungeon, is the same as that of Beethoven's "Fidelio," but in Paale's work the political elements are lessened and personal love and honesty are celebrated. The script is also in Italian, and this difference in language makes a considerable difference in the music in terms of expression and rhythm. The structure follows the form of Italian opera, influenced by Hasse, Porpora, Mozart, and others, with a succession of rhythmic recitative and coloratura arias, cabalettas, and mellow duets.The music is full of color by Alessandro De Marchi, renowned for his conducting of Italian baroque operas, and Bellocchi's superbly controlled and highly challenging coloratura in the title role is a must-hear.
