Description:
Laurent Pelly, the great Offenbach specialist, brings us a Barbe-bleue full of satire and delight The village shepherd Daphnis (in reality Prince Saphir) and the flower girl Fleurette (in reality Princess Hermia) are acknowledged sweethearts. Then the cowherd girl Boulotte appears and starts making eyes at Daphnis. The alchemist Popolani announces that he has come in search of a sixth wife for Bluebeard, gathers the village women together and holds a lottery - which Boulotte wins. Count Oscar, King Bobèche's chamberlain, happens to be present and recognises the lottery basket as belonging to the royal household. He has been searching for the princess who was set adrift on the river, and is now certain that Fleurette, the basket's owner, is the missing Princess Hermia. But just as they are about to set off for the palace, Bluebeard arrives in search of his new wife and falls for Fleurette at first sight - whereupon Popolani informs him that the lottery has already settled the matter in Boulotte's favour... The work is an outright parody of Perrault's fairy tale "Bluebeard". At the time of its composition France was ruled by Napoleon III of the Second Empire, notorious as an incorrigible womaniser, and the piece served as a sharp satire on him and on those in power, giving the ordinary citizens of Paris a welcome outlet for their frustrations. This Opéra de Lyon staging is directed by Laurent Pelly, celebrated for his inventive productions. He places these larger-than-life characters skilfully within a contemporary setting and succeeds in bringing a distinctive humour to what is on the face of it a cruel story. The title role is taken by the French tenor Yann Beuron, whose sweet, beautiful voice throws Bluebeard's peculiar character into relief. The charming Fleurette is sung by the soprano Jennifer Courcier, while Héloïse Mas, singing and acting with great flavour, drives the story forward as Boulotte. In the pit, the young Michele Spotti conducts with flowing, vital energy that draws out all the appeal of Offenbach's score. As a bonus, the release includes "Tales of Offenbach", a fifty-minute documentary by Reiner E. Moritz, the master of classical music documentary. Directors Laurent Pelly and Barrie Kosky, the conductor Enrique Mazzola and the singers Felicity Lott and Yann Beuron discuss Offenbach's life and the appeal of his works, illustrated with footage of productions in which they themselves took part (La Belle Hélène, Orphée aux enfers, Barbe-bleue and Les Contes d'Hoffmann). Not to be missed. Naxos Japan
