A hidden and important figure of the generation that prepared Bach, one of the most famous and strongly appealing of his presence Philip Heinrich Erlebach was a composer from central Germany in the mid-17th century, the same generation as Marin Marais and Corelli. He served at the court of Rudolstadt in Thuringia, where he left a vast body of works until his death in 1714, most of which were destroyed by fire. The works he left behind, however, are all brilliant and fascinating, especially the didactic arias that fall somewhere between Schütz and Bach, and the solo voice, accompanied by a 17th century German ensemble with multiple viola da gambas, sings the German verses with a beautifully elongated melody. The trio sonatas, in which the violin and viola da gamba stand on equal footing, are also full of unique charm. This album is a breathtaking performance by the talented lineup of musicians who have recorded extensively for Café Zimmermann, including Eduardo Eguess from Argentina as a string player, and it has brought Erlebach to the forefront of the world's attention.
