Pervo Järvi & Tonhalle's second Tchaikovsky release! Following the successful release of Symphony No. 5 (ALPHA659/NYCX-10175 with Japanese commentary), this is the second release of the complete Tchaikovsky symphonies by Paavo Järvi and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. This is the last of Tchaikovsky's symphonies in a period of only 12 years, and the first of his three late symphonies, No. 4, and No. 2, a small but popular work in a familiar style that makes extensive use of Russian folk songs. The two symphonies are in fact closely connected in that No. 4 also includes a quotation from a Russian folk song in its fourth movement, and No. 2 was extensively revised shortly after its release. Järvi's performance of No. 2 is lively and dynamic, while his performance of No. 4 is deep and passionate. The way Järvi builds an overwhelming climax with exquisitely swinging tempi and deeply sung melodies is reminiscent of Bernstein, whom he admires, but also stylishly exhilarating, creating an image of Tchaikovsky that is unique to Järvi.
