Arcana was founded in 1993 by Michel Bernsten, the legendary producer of Astree, the Renaissance lute art that flourished in the south of France, and was re-established as an independent label when it was dissolved by NAIVE. This is a lute recording with a rich flavor. The Milan-born lutenist Paladino was active in the middle of the 16th century in Lyon, in the south of France, where many Italians lived at that time. The two collections of works published there are rare examples of Italian instrumental compositions coming to France. The arrangements are interesting in that they are contemporary with the heyday of polyphonic chansons by Januquin and others, while the fantasias and dances have a depth that is reminiscent of Francesco da Milano and others. The virtuoso Feret's solid interpretation conveys the full appeal of the music. Naxos Japan
