Description:

Lully's revised manuscript of "After Glück," the fantastic 1778 version that was performed for the first time in history by Niquet! Lully's masterpiece of the last years of his life, "Armide", which he was able to complete with his longtime collaborator, the poet Quinault, remained a mainstay of the Opera after its premiere in 1686, but due to changes in fashion, it was not performed on the stage until 1766. In 1777, Gluck wrote a successful new version of "Armide" that overshadowed Lully's work. However, some French nationalists were vehemently opposed to Gluck, and they sought to revive Lully's works by adapting them for the new era, as in the case of "Persay" (Niquet's 1770 recording/ALPHA967), which was performed in 1770 to celebrate the inauguration of the Royal Opera House at Versailles. Louis-Joseph Francoeur (nephew of the long-lived composer François Francoeur), who was active at the Paris Opera at the time, used clarinets, horns, and other instruments characteristic of classical France to great effect, resulting in a surprisingly fresh sound, but with the soul of Lully's works intact and unique. The revised version, however, was not completed. The revised version, however, was never completed, never performed, and has been forgotten.Hervé Niquet, who is renowned for reviving buried French masterpieces, performed this version for the first time in history, and this album was recorded afterwards. The musicologists Benoit Dratowitzki and Julien Dubourg have carefully supplemented the unfinished Act 5, Scene 3 and thereafter. The singers include Jans, Mechelen, Christoyannis, and others of the highest caliber, resulting in a wonderful performance that will challenge the true value of the work. This recording is also very valuable in that it allows us to hear the changes in the musical situation in France in the 100 years since the original version. The French libretto, its English translation, and a color booklet of more than 80 pages with many images are included. Naxos Japan
