Originally from the Ulster region of Northern Ireland, Harty began his musical career as a piano accompanist before becoming the conductor of the Halle Orchestra, where he enjoyed great success. As a composer, he is best known for his orchestral arrangements of Handel's "Music on the Water" and "Fireworks at the Royal Court" and his own "Irish Symphony," but he also wrote many excellent songs with the sense he developed as an accompanist working with many singers. The 23 songs on this disc include the popular "Green Hills of Antrim" and "My Lagan Love," as well as songs based on poems by Walt Whitman, Thomas Campion, and Harty himself, all of which express his love of the Irish tradition in a richly emotional way. In addition, tracks 5, 11, 16, 21, and 25, which include two solo piano pieces, are available in new editions based on manuscripts by Jeremy Dibble, a scholar of British music who also wrote the liner notes for this recording. The Liverpool-born mezzo-soprano Kathryn Rudge, described by The Times as a "Rising Star of Classical Music," sings the songs. Naxos Japan
