Camerata Tchaikovsky is a chamber ensemble formed in London by Russian-born Yuri Gislin, who is active in both violin and viola performance. Following their critically acclaimed debut release (ORC10098) in The Guardian, this second album from Orchid Classics features music from the various Romantic periods that flourished in Russia during the 19th and 20th centuries, and Gislin not only performs but also performs all of the works on the album except for Arensky's "Variations on a Theme by Tchaikovsky. With the exception of "Variations on a Theme by Tchaikovsky," Gislin has arranged all of the pieces to create a unique sound. The main work is Glazunov's "Concerto for Alto Saxophone" arranged for viola and string orchestra, followed by Alensky's "String Quartet No. 2", a tribute to Tchaikovsky, Borodin's well-known "Nocturne" from the third movement of "String Quartet No. 2", and Tchaikovsky's folk songs. The five pieces are "Andante Cantabile" with a folk melody by Tchaikovsky, and "Vocalise" by Rachmaninoff, a well-known and beautiful piece. Naxos Japan
