Description:
World premiere video! Violanta, the second opera by the child prodigy Korngold, is set in Venice in the 15th century. Violanta proposes to her husband Simone to murder Alfonso, a Neapolitan prince who seduced her sister and drove her to suicide. When Violanta succeeds in seducing Alfonso, she falls in love with him and sings an intoxicating love duet with him. Korngold was a child prodigy from an early age. From his youth, he produced a succession of works, all of which were highly acclaimed. This "Violanta" is his second opera, written when he was around 18 years old, and shows the influence of Verismo Opera, Puccini, Respighi, and Richard Strauss. The premiere was held in March 1916 at the Munich State Opera under the baton of Bruno Walter, along with another Korngold opera, "Polycrates' Ring," and was a great success. Pier Luigi Pizzi, the director of this film, has moved the setting to the 1920s, when Korngold was active, and created the sweltering atmosphere of a Venetian carnival night with glittering costumes and stage decorations. The sensual singing of Annemarie Kramer (Violanta), the sweetly beautiful voice of Norman Reinhardt (Alfonso), and the rigorous singing and acting of Michael Kupfer-Radetsky (husband Simone) form an excellent contrast, and the baton of master singer Pinkus Steinberg brings out the beauty of Korngold's music without any trace. The master singer Pinkus Steinberg's baton brings out the beauty of Korngold's music. Naxos Japan
