Description:
The monumental oratorio at the intersection of opera and religious drama is now available in a long-awaited new recording by an up-and-coming French composer. Stradella was the real founder of the ensemble concerto, and his revolutionary works fascinated the people of his time, but his life of debauchery led to his death at the hands of assassins in Genoa. His "St. John the Baptist," a dramatic oratorio with elements of religious drama, was a great success when first performed in 1675, but the score lay deep in a library until it was rediscovered in 1949. It is said that it was Maria Callas who sang the role of Herodia's daughter (commonly called Salome, but her name is not mentioned in the work) at the revival in Perugia. St. John, who is said to have baptized Jesus, is played by Paul-Antoine Benos Ziane, one of the most popular countertenors in Paris today, who has been to Japan. The daughter of Herodia, who asks King Herod to take John's head, is played by Alicia Amo, whose religious cantata (iTinerant Early label) by Corselli has received high acclaim. In addition, Gaia Petrone, Artavast Sarkissian, and other seasonal singers active in the field of ancient music.Together with Le Banke Celeste, led by Guyon, who excels at bringing religious vocal works to life, the orchestra will breathe new life into a masterpiece by a genius buried in history.
