Live recording of Beethoven's Ninth conducted by Haitink in February 2019! About four months after this concert, Haitink announced his retirement from conducting, saying in a June 12 interview, "At the age of 90, I am already not going to conduct, and once I stop, I will never conduct again." And the last concert of his conducting career took place in Lucerne on September 6, ending his 65-year career as a conductor. This performance of the Ninth, just prior to the announcement of his retirement, can truly be called the summing up of Haitink's conducting career. The audience can hear the passionate exchange between Haitink and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, with whom he had built a good relationship over the years. In the first and second movements, Haitink shows a relaxed yet intense expression, in the third movement, he shows a meditative beauty, and in the final movement, he builds up the climax with a solemn solo voice and chorus, and the orchestra gives its best as if responding to his passionate feelings.
