The first important haute-contre was Louis Gaulel Duményi (or Duménil), who became famous in his lifetime, although there were already haute-contres who made history in the middle of the 17th century. Goral Dumény (or Duménil) was the first important haute-comtre. When Lully discovered him, he was a cook, and when he made his debut in 1677, everyone admired his acting and the power of his voice, and was amazed at his ear for absorbing and refining all of the music. Centuries later, Baroque star tenor Reinhard van Mechelen has planned a trilogy of albums celebrating the haute-contres of Lully, Rameau, and Gluck, and this is the first installment of the trilogy.
