Description:
The Duke of Limburg (now the Netherlands and eastern Belgium) was born around 1380, and was active for a long time in Liège, the center of today's French-speaking Belgium, and later in Vicenza, Padua, Venice, and other parts of northern Italy. His works show his connection with northern Italy, including Vicenza, Padua, and Venice. He was even older than Dufay, and belonged to the early generation of Netherlandish composers who are still unknown and noteworthy. His works, which are preserved in more than 45 volumes in three large manuscripts of the time, combine the style of the later Netherlandish school with his own original harmonies and melodies influenced by northern Italy. The four voices (soprano, mezzo, tenor, and baritone) are accompanied by the medieval fiddles of Romain and Elizabeth Ramsey, as well as two other members on lute, guitar, harp, or organette, with Romain himself supporting the singing as the second baritone, creating a thick harmony.
