Tchaikovsky's chamber music works are tucked away behind his brilliant symphonies and ballets. The three string quartets were all written during Tchaikovsky's thirties, when he was a teacher at the Moscow Conservatory, and the second movement of the first quartet, written in 1871, is known as the independent "Andante Cantabile". The second movement of No. 1, written in 1871, is a masterpiece, popularly known as the independent "Andante Cantabile. No. 3, written in 1875, was written in response to the death of Ferdinand Laub, a violinist who was a good friend of Tchaikovsky and the first performer of his String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2. Tchaikovsky's heartfelt condolences. The B-flat major string quartet in one movement is an excellent work from his student days, while the sextet "Memories of Florence" was written in 1890, in his later years, and is a rich work with a profound sound that makes full use of counterpoint. The second movement's pizzicato melody and the theme of the third movement, which is in the style of a Russian folk song, form a diverse combination of elements that make up the entire piece.
