Swanilda discovers that her fiancé, Franz, is crazy about the beautiful Coppelia, who sits on the balcony every day and reads. The two are on the verge of a breakup, but Coppelia is in fact not a person at all, but a puppet created by Coppelius. The Bolshoi version of "Coppelia," restored from the 19th-century original by choreographer Sergei Vikharev, who was a dancer with the Mariinsky Ballet and other companies and died suddenly in 2017 at the age of 55, features the energetic Swanilda and pure Franz in full force. The colorful costumes are also a sight to behold, especially the spectacular Divertissement with its many dancers, a showpiece of the Bolshoi Ballet's unique style.
