Description:
Two of Schumann's rarely performed collections of choral works, "On the Peasants and the Princess" and "Songs of Advent," and Bach's Cantata No. 105, which Schumann arranged. The three pieces will be performed by Estonia's leading chamber choir, the Estonian Philharmonic, and the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra led by Hakkinen. Composed in November 1848, the "Pentecostal Songs" are based on poems by Rückert, and are impressive works in which Schumann sings long, breathy melodies that are typical of the composer in his mature period. When the "Old Bach Society" was founded in Leipzig in 1850 with the purpose of publishing the complete works of J.S. Bach, Schumann wrote in his "New Musical Times" that Bach's works were important and that he would promote them by arranging and performing some of them. Schumann also made arrangements of some of Bach's works and performed them to popularize them. This cantata was arranged for his own performance in 1849.
