Queens of the Stone Age (hereinafter referred to as "QOTSA"), the absolute champions of US alternative and hard rock who have conquered the world, have made their longtime dream come true with their film "Alive in the Catacombs".
Filmed and recorded in July 2024, Alive in the Catacombs is a truly one-of-a-kind experience that captures QOTSA's unprecedented appearance and sound. The setlist, carefully selected from songs spanning their career, has been boldly reconstructed for Catacomb. There, in a space surrounded by millions of human bones, QOTSA is present in a more intimate way than ever before--"We played to the largest 'audience' ever," says Josh Hommi.
The Paris Catacomb is a massive underground ossuary, 320 km (200 miles) long, containing the remains of millions of people buried in the 18th century, with many of the walls composed of skulls and bones. Josh has dreamed of performing here in Catacomb as QOTSA since his first visit nearly 20 years ago.However, the city of Paris had never given the artists permission to perform. Being good law-abiding citizens, QOTSA waited for the dream to come true until official permission was granted.
The music selection, instrumentation, and staging were all meticulously planned with the utmost respect for the Catacomb setting. Everything from the acoustics and ambient sounds (dripping water, echoes, and natural resonances) to the dark lighting that enhances the music was considered down to the smallest detail. Far from the comfort of studio soundproof rooms and onstage monitors, Alive in the Catacombs captures the band not only taking on this challenge, but embracing it head-on. Josh recalls. (1/2)
