Produced by Curtis Mayfield, this is a young soul masterpiece by the original family soul group! The Chicago soul group Five Stair Steps, known as the "First Family of Soul" and Kenny Burke's group, released their debut album on Curtis Mayfield's Windy C label in 1967. This CD couples their second album "Our Family Portrait" released on Buddah in 1968 and "Loves Happening" released on Curtom in 1969. Loves Happening," which opens with a giddy cover of the Impressions' "Stay Close To Me," is an album almost entirely composed of Curtis Mayfield's work. The introductory drum break on M-2 has been sampled by many hip-hop classics including Naughty By Nature's "Hip Hop Hooray," and M-4 features a lively rhythm section, horns and strings, and the familiar singing of Meijer Lance. This is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece that combines the golden era Chicago soul manner and vigorous young soul. Our Family Portrait" produced by Clarence Jr. has a different charm from "Loves~", which features original, quiet numbers and Bacharach covers (M-14, M-15), and is also a must-listen album.
