A supremely cool 1966 recording that reimagines JB and Stevie Wonder through his own unique aesthetic. Lose yourself in this stylish and gritty sound. John Schroeder was a genius producer who was churning out hits for EMI and Pye Records at the time. Leading his own orchestra, he set out to recreate the “soul music” that had been imported from America and was sweeping the clubs, using sophisticated British-style arrangements. The recording featured a lineup of the finest session musicians in London at the time. Driven by their determination to “truly recreate the groove of Black music,” they created an orchestra with a surprisingly thick, funky rhythm section. Classic tracks like James Brown’s “I Got You” and Stevie Wonder’s “Fingertips” are given a completely new lease on life through a lavish horn section and a sharp Hammond organ. Particularly noteworthy is the “rich bass response”—unlike anything typically found on British releases of the era. This is proof that Schroeder produced the album with the dance floor firmly in mind. This album miraculously balances the elegance of lounge music with the raw energy of R&B. Re-evaluated within the context of rare groove, this record will evoke nostalgia for longtime fans while offering younger listeners an experience full of new discoveries.
