The word "prism" perfectly encapsulates the charm of Venezuelan music. Colorless rays of light reveal color as they pass through the triangular crystal prisms. Sometimes they disperse and split into six, while other times the light is perceived as two colors, cold and warm. Sometimes they appear to be five colors divided into groups of three and two. Just as there is a physical phenomenon of light wavelengths behind artistic colors, there is an optically precise play of rhythm hidden behind the vivid colors of Venezuelan music. Shizuka Shimoyama has devoted her passion to unraveling Venezuelan rhythms with a musicological obsession and a rare geekiness. She has refined the principles of the rhythms she has explored into her own physical sensibilities, and has developed her own unique form based on an appreciation of the indigenous groove.
