This time, we will enjoy a fascinating program combining three sonatas and dances. The D minor Sonata (No. 17) in D850, a favorite of Haruki Murakami, is known to be a long, rambling work that many pianists have trouble putting together, but Medjieva's interpretation is simple and layered. While clearly setting forth the structure of the work as a whole, Medjieva painstakingly delineates the character of each movement, allowing the listener to listen to over 40 minutes of music in one fell swoop. The E minor Sonata (No. 6), D566, has a lovely fresh interpretation befitting a young Schubert, but the album's crowning achievement is the B-flat major Sonata (No. 21), D960. The symphonic scale, the deep spirituality, and the way each phrase is refined with the finesse of a composer who seems to be close to the heart of the composer, are the hallmarks of a master craftsman's art. The depths of the music, as if one were peering into the abyss of life, appear from time to time, and are unfathomable. This is another masterful performance of Schubert's masterpiece of piano sonatas.The accompanying collection of dances is also charming, but with an appealing sense of resignation that suddenly reminds us of the transience of life.
