Children of the Mushroom was a cult band that gained popularity in the local West Coast scene for their heavy yet pop-infused, groovy psychedelic sound, which has even been compared to Iron Butterfly. This compilation brings together their only single along with previously unreleased tracks and live recordings. Hailing from Thousand Oaks in Southern California, Children of the Mushroom was a band that gained popularity on the West Coast local scene from the late 1960s through the early 1970s. Active during the transitional period of the psychedelic movement, they released only a single single, yet they were a cult group that has long been highly regarded among collectors for their unique sound and quality. Feedback, fuzz, VOX organ, mystical vocals… First up are the two tracks from their 1968 single, “August Mademoiselle” and “You Can’t Erase a Mirror”—absolutely mind-blowing! From the pleasantly funky, swaying “Blade” to the lengthy progressive “Exordium,” reminiscent of Deep Purple’s early days, these are previously unreleased recordings from the same period. The tracks that follow are more heavy and raw, yet the organ tones retain a certain melancholy, creating a series of compelling songs with a unique character. You can also sense a connection to the recently unearthed collection of late unreleased tracks, *Lady*. The final two tracks are live takes from a single, recorded during the band’s 2006 reunion. The ‘August Mademoiselle/You Can’t Erase a Mirror’ single is a rare item that can fetch over $500 on the secondhand market; this is an excellent release that lets you relive the atmosphere of the West Coast from that era.
