The Winners (Finland)
Description:
The Winners are a group of Finnish jazz greats who have gathered the wisdom of Finnish jazz to create "Bitches Brew," a progressive cross-border attempt at modern jazz, now available on CD for the first time! The Winners is a collection of Finnish jazz musicians, including Pekka & Heikki Sarmanto, Mike Koskinen, Juhani Aaltonen, Edward Vesala and others, who represent the best of Scandinavian jazz, performing Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew," Herbie Hancock's "Crossings," Chick Corea's "Return to Forever," and many other works from Finland's finest jazz musicians. This is an ironclad all-star project that brings together the wisdom of Finland's leading Finnish jazz musicians, and is a response to Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, Herbie Hancock's Crossings, and Chick Corea's Return to Forever, etc. It was formed at the 1972 Poly Jazz Festival (one of the leading summer jazz festivals in Northern Europe held annually since 1966 in Poly, in southwest Finland), and was formed on the festival stage. After performing on stage at the festival, the group recorded this album, "Poly Jazz Festival Composition Contest," in 1973. As the title suggests, it is a compilation of the top four compositions from the festival's composition contest, all of which are original compositions by local composers from Finland.Originally released on the Finnish Odeon label (EMI) in 1973, this is the first CD reissue after 40 years of being out of print. After a series of reissues on the PORTER label in the late 2000s, not only the most fanatical Scandinavian jazz enthusiasts, but also rare-guru diggers such as Dublab and Jazzman and a new generation of omnivorous music fans have been paying attention to and re-evaluating the music of Heikki Sarmanto, who is now a member of the PORTER label. The players are all top musicians with solid careers and skills, including Heikki Sarmanto, Edward Vesala, and saxophonist Juhani Aaltonen, who also played in Ihlo Koivistoinen's band for a long time. The sound is truly unique, with a mix of free and post-fusion, eclipsed by rock, with a touch of finish jazz, and a side trip to folk. Not only jazz/fusion fans, but also progressive rock listeners and out music freaks should give it a try.
