Soft Machine

The originators of the Canterbury scene and one of the scene's most famous bands, the Henny Onstad Art Center near Oslo, Norway, recorded the entire concert from their two-night European tour on February 27 and 28, 1971, in a 4CD clamshell box set! Now available in a 4CD clamshell boxed set! The concerts were part of an art exhibition by the Boyle Family, a British art group. It was special in that a film of its member, Mark Boyle, was projected during the soft machine performance. More importantly, the tapes on which both concerts were recorded have been preserved, and they are in excellent shape. These are wonderful live recordings that offer a glimpse into how the sound changed dramatically from one night to the next. This is the first time that two consecutive nights of live recordings by one of Soft Machine's most classic quartets have been released in their entirety, although two sets from the second night (February 28, 1971) have been previously released. The first night (February 27, 1971) has never been released before. The sound balance between the instruments on the original tape has been slightly improved, and the band sounds as if they are playing right in front of you, giving you a realistic soft machine sound. In the words of the late Michael King, who released Sunday concert on his own Reel Recordings label in 2009, In the words of the late Michael King, who released Sunday concert on his own Reel Recordings label in 2009, "This is clearly the best recording of a classical soft-machine quartet ever made on tape. This is a rare and important live recording for Soft Machine fans and Canterbury fans alike. Elton Dean: alto sax, saxello, Hohner pianet Hugh Hopper: bass Mike Rutledge: Hohner pianet, Lowrey Holiday Deluxe organ, Fender Rhodes Robert Wyatt:drums, vocals
