Pichon & Pygmalion are said to be the most difficult artists to get tickets for in Europe. With each release, they continue to amaze the world with their performances in terms of content and standard. After the recent Monteverdi and Bach, here comes the German Requiem by Brahms. From the opening prelude by strings, we were surprised by the extraordinary beauty of the sound, and the following extremely delicate choral entry pulled us into the work.
Brahms' German Requiem is a "consolation for the afflicted. It is different from the Requiem for the Dead, which is based on a grand and overwhelming vision of the Last Judgment. Brahms began work on this requiem when he was about 24 years old. He would continue to work on this work for almost a decade. In this work, Brahms does not play the role of a communicator of a religious message, although he is very careful in the selection of the text. Rather, Brahms essentially finished the work as a solitary individual: in a letter to conductor Karl Reinthaler dated October 9, 1867, Brahms stated, "As to the title, I must confess that I would prefer to write only 'Man' rather than 'Germany.'" He stated.The composition has a grand orchestral and choral structure, but the Pygmalion, led by Pichon, blossoms with the kind of tender emotion and tremulous, delicate beauty that can be found in the most intimate moments of a solo piano work, for example.
