Description:

Furtwängler & Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's Ninth Symphony of '51 revived with totally unexpected good sound! This mint LP reissue from Osaka is the Ninth with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra from January 1951. This is an unexpectedly good sounding reissue of the Ninth with the Vienna Philharmonic in January 1951, about half a year before the Bayreuth Ninth. The interpretation of the music and Furtwängler's energy are very similar. However, while the Bayreuth Ninth seems to be a work in which the music endures suffering and tries to reach a spiritual height, the Ninth with the Vienna Philharmonic reminds us that enjoying the music, or the sound, is also an important element of the music. Specifically, the tone and rich resonance of the strings and winds of the Vienna Philharmonic, the good balance between orchestra, soloists, and chorus, which seems to be due to the quality of the hall, and the skill of the Viennese musicians in smoothly resolving Furtwängler's interpretation, no matter how hard he tried to pound it in, with the help of lubricating oil. But there is a certain spirituality to the Viennese performance. However, this does not mean that the Viennese performance neglects spirituality, and the spiritual depth of the third movement is no less than that of the Bayreuth performance. The recordings used in this reissue are the second edition, not the first. The first edition was airchecked, and the fourth movement is said to have been repaired at the Bayreuth Ninth. The second edition is a coherent master transcription, as you can clearly hear from the sound of this recording. The rotation of the master tape is slightly unstable in the first movement. Please be aware of this. (Kenshi Ota, Otaken Records) Tobu Land System
