Don Carlo, a prince of Spain, is in love with Elisabetta, a princess of France. However, due to political intrigue, she is married to Don Carlo's father, Philip II. Don Carlo decides to turn his back on everything and help Rodrigo in his quest to "save Flanders from the tyranny of Spain. This is a betrayal of his country. The first performance of "Don Carlo" was in French, but Verdi revised it many times, and several Italian versions exist. This video shows the 1884 Italian version used in the 2016 "Verdi Festival" performance at the Royal Theatre of Parma.The story is condensed and the music is denser, with the exception of the ballet music, which was cut from the first draft.
