Bernard Haitink, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra

Description:

Mahler's Symphony No. 3 is the "longest" of all symphonies written during the Romantic period. The original plan was for the work to consist of seven movements, each with its own title, but the title was dropped at the time of publication, and the last movement, "Life on High," was moved to the last movement of Symphony No. 4. However, even without the title, the Third Symphony contains many elements, including a quotation from "The Child's Wonderful Horn" and a passage from Nietzsche's "Zarathustra," which Mahler was attracted to at the time, and is said to reflect Mahler's views on nature and life in every aspect. Although it does not use an organ as in No. 2 "Resurrection," it is a large-scale work requiring a large orchestra, a variety of percussion instruments, solo alto voice in the fourth movement, and solo alto voice, children's chorus, and women's chorus in the fifth movement, and a performance time of approximately 100 minutes. This performance conducted by Haitink was recorded live at the Gasteig in Munich in June 2016, and despite his advanced age (87), Haitink's performance is very fresh and full of energy.Lomberger, who solos in the fourth and fifth movements, is a mezzo-soprano singer from Germany. She specializes in religious music, including Bach's cantatas, and has released recordings of Bach's "Matthew Passion" and Handel's "The Israelites in Egypt" on the BR Klassik label. Her sincere expression and deep voice have been well received. Naxos Japan
