Description:
Herbert Blomstedt, a renowned conductor known for his many masterful performances, has been the principal conductor of many orchestras, but he is especially fond of the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, which he founded in 1925. He gave his first concert with this orchestra in 1956 (Blomstedt was then principal of the Norrkoping Symphony Orchestra), and was eventually appointed principal of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra in 1962, and five years later became the first principal conductor of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra (Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra). Five years later, he became the first principal conductor of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. Since then, while respecting tradition, he has expanded the orchestra's new repertoire, actively performing Mahler, Bruckner, and other contemporary Scandinavian works. The orchestra's capabilities have been dramatically enhanced. The orchestra has also released an excellent album of recordings, including the first Danish collection of Nilsen's works, Grieg's "Peer Gynt," and Mendelssohn's symphonies. Blomstedt's tenure as chief conductor lasted until 1977, but the two orchestras have maintained a good relationship ever since, with annual concerts in Copenhagen since the mid-1990s.In 2016, Blomstedt was awarded the Leonie Sonning Music Prize, the greatest honor in Danish music, and this 2007 video also features Schubert and Bruckner in full force.
