Both Richard Strauss by Tilson Thomas are recorded in rehearsal and performance, giving a full view of the process by which Tilson Thomas used his tact to create his enormous music.Kurt Sanderling's "Ode to the Earth," which is known for spinning out the most beautiful sounds from any orchestra, Reinsdorf's dynamic "No. 1," in which he maneuvers the rather functional sounding Boston Symphony Orchestra at will, and Henchen's passionate "No. 6" with the Monet Symphony Orchestra, known for its solid conducting, are all part of a complete Mahler program that may not be complete, but at least they provide a clue to understanding these complex works and are most certainly enjoyable.
