From Classical to Romanticism and Modern and Contemporary. These two works are located at the turning point of each of these three eras. Jansons vividly portrayed them. The interpretation of Berlioz's "Fantasie" is a departure from the highly acclaimed Beethoven symphony cycle, and he handles the chaotic atmosphere and overflowing madness of this piece with great skill, while bringing the whole piece together in a coherent manner. Of course, Jansons's "audacity" is still there. From the first movement, the way he makes the phrases sing and the details of the dunamik treatment, etc., are all bursting with his terribly thought-out Jansons style. On the other hand, Varèse's "Ionización" is music for percussion ensemble of 13 players and is known as a bridge work from Romanticism to the modern era. The kind of bewitching atmosphere created by the complex rhythmic interplay is truly reminiscent of Sabato.Although the two pieces were performed at completely different times, it is surprising to hear them side by side and find that they fit together better than one would expect. I am also impressed by Jansons' unwavering attitude toward the music. Naxos Japan
