This is a collection of choral works by Schnittke and Pärt by Dijkstra, currently the world's foremost choral conductor. The Concerto for Chorus, Schnittke's most famous choral work, is based on a text by the medieval Armenian poet Gregory Nakaretsi (951-1003). The dramatic and serene movements are contrasted, all sung by unaccompanied chorus with a hint of Russian Orthodox influence. The "Three Sacred Songs," also based on Gregory's poem, was written at the request of conductor Valery Poljansky. The first piece's unexpectedly beautiful melody has an uneasy resonance that is unmistakably Schnittke. The small cantata "After the Victory" is a bright and powerful work, which is unusual for Pärt, who usually writes serene pieces, and is a must for chorus lovers in the repertoire. The Bavarian Radio Choir produces a superb sound with a well-balanced performance that is heavy and transparent. Naxos Japan
