Schumann (1810-1856) composed two oratorios in rapid succession in his later years, "The Pilgrimage of the Roses" and the Requiem in D-flat major, which Spelling performs with great compassion. The Pilgrimage of the Roses is the story of a rosebud who descends to the human world, and although the subject matter is similar to that of his youthful work, Paradise and Peri, it is filled with much more mature music. The Requiem is his last major work, and it is both mournful and serenely beautiful, as if he had used all the strength he possessed. Both are extremely substantial works, but rarely performed, and this is a masterful performance that recreates them in their full, life-size form. Naxos Japan
