No. 1 and No. 5 "Revolution", latest studio recording in January 2023, another stunning release this year! This is the first edition of the complete Shostakovich symphonies for 4-handed piano by the piano duo Anastasia & Liubov, who also released the complete symphonies by Tchaikovsky and Beethoven to great acclaim. Symphony No. 1 was arranged by Slavinsky. The composer studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory with Nikolaev and Tcherepnin. He excelled in composing musical and ballet works. In the piano version, the dissonance is emphasized and the music is more avant-garde. The third movement is moist and moderately contemplative and highly effective. The arrangement of No. 5 is by Atovmyan. Atovmyan is widely known to Shostakovich enthusiasts as the composer of the suite editions of Shostakovich's film works. Myaskovsky's Symphony No. 25 is dedicated to him. This is a clear performance that exposes the classical nature of the music to the light of day. The recording is, as ever, by the masterful Cosimo Galoppa. The recording was made at once at a reunion between Christmas and New Year's.
