A collection of piano works by Spanish and Portuguese composers performed by Portuguese pianist Paulo Oliveira. Spain is often associated with passion, but many of the pieces here shine with intellectual beauty. Albeniz's "España" is a well-known masterpiece. Armando José Fernández (1906-1983) is a Portuguese composer (Portuguese, so his name is Jose, not José), but his clear style is very attractive. Pedro Blanco (Lopez) (1883-1919) was a Spanish composer. Born in Leon in the north, he studied in Madrid before moving to Portugal, where he died in Porto. Blanco's music, which mixed romanticism with the modern sounds of Debussy and others, was excellent, but he fell victim to the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918-1920 and died prematurely at age 35. Just listening to the three pieces recorded here, one can't help but wonder if he would have lived longer. José Viana da Motta (1868-1948) was a Portuguese composer. He is best known as Liszt's last pupil.The three Portuguese scenes are very familiar and witty. The Catalan composer Javier Monsalvatche (1912-2002) brought a modern sound to the concert. The Sonatine for Yvette was written for his daughter. Paulo Oliveira studied at the Conservatorio Superior de Musica de Lisbon before becoming a high student of Sequeira Costa (1929-2019, pupil of Viana da Motta), a native of the same town and professor of piano at the University of Kansas, USA. Her uncharacteristically gentle playing is appealing. Tobu Shoji Co.
