Flutist Masahiro Arita, who has been active at the forefront of music since the 1970s, released "Pan's Flute: 400 Years of Flute, Its Music and Instrument" on the Ariale label (Nippon Columbia) in 1998, which had a huge impact on the classical music world at the time. It is still being reissued and loved as a masterpiece. Inheriting the concept of the 1998 edition of "Pan's Flute," the album features works spanning 400 years from the Renaissance to the present day, performed on the instruments (or their imitations) of the time when they were composed. In addition, this album consists entirely of unaccompanied flute pieces, and includes Renaissance works by Bassano and others, Baroque music by Bach and others, the modern flute masterpiece Debussy's "Silanx," and contemporary works by Takemitsu and Arita's own compositions. The performance, in which Masahiro Arita freely manipulates a total of 17 instruments with different fingerings and pitches, is a truly one-of-a-kind work made possible only by his pioneering work on ancient instruments.
