An opera woven from the exquisitely beautiful melodies of the tragically short-lived composer Purcell Theodore Kurentzis and Musica Aeterna present “The Queen of India,” the final opera composed by the English Baroque composer Purcell. This video recording captures the live performance from the Teatre del Liceu in 2013, which generated significant buzz after the visionary Peter Sellars reconstructed and directed this opera—left unfinished due to Purcell’s untimely death at age 36. Fascinated by *The Queen of India*—which tells the tragic story of Queen Sempoala, who seized the throne of Mexico before taking her own life—Peter Sellars spent 25 years refining his concept. He restructured the story and characters from the novel *The Lost Chronicles of Terra Fama*. In addition to the original music and libretto of *The Indian Queen* (approximately 50 minutes), the production incorporates Purcell’s religious anthems and instrumental pieces musically, and text from Aguilar’s novel in the libretto. Aguilar’s novel depicts the 16th-century Spanish conquest of Central America through the perspectives of several women of that era; by overlaying this narrative onto the plot of Purcell’s opera, the work takes on a more multifaceted and contemporary significance.
