This work portrays the concept of eternity as embodied by each composer in their “Preludes.” “Debussy sees eternity by capturing a single moment. For Rachmaninoff, eternity lies in the continuity.” —The form of “eternity” inherent in the genre of the prelude, as discovered by Ikuyo Nakamichi. “The Road to 2027,” a project Ikuyo Nakamichi has been pursuing since 2018 over the course of a decade, is a grand endeavor that traverses the history of piano music—from Bach to Schoenberg—following a unique theme established for each performance. This live recording was made in October 2022—at the project’s midpoint—during a concert themed “Preludes: Signs of Eternity.” This album allows listeners to hear the results of two composers with distinct personalities tackling the “prelude”—a form whose expressive possibilities were expanded by Chopin—using entirely different approaches. The 12 preludes in Debussy’s *Preludes, Book 2* are characterized by their diversity, likely influenced by the novel rhythms and striking sounds of Stravinsky’s ballet music, which had been premiered by the Ballets Russes that were taking Paris by storm. Together with Book 1, which was released on CD in the same series in 2020, this completes Nakamichi’s recording of all 24 pieces. Rachmaninoff’s “Preludes,” composed to encompass all 24 keys, are music of the inner soul that carries on the legacy of Chopin.
