Pianist Igor Levit was born in 1987 in Novgorod, Russia. He signed a long-term contract with Sony Classical, and his first release in 2013 was a double album, which was unusual for a debut release. The album was also a big hit at the time because it featured Beethoven's late piano sonatas, which are profound and cutting-edge in their content, and are often referred to as the "New Testament" for pianists. Levitt spent six years recording all 32 sonatas, starting with this 2-CD set, and in 2019 he released a box set of all 32 sonatas, which also received high acclaim. From the two-disc debut album that marked Levitt's starting point, the last three sonatas, the culmination of Beethoven's art, are released independently.
