Young master Igor Levitt's new work on two discs features four monumental works spanning almost two centuries, from 1720 to 1910. For Levitt, these works are "often intimate, yet somehow incredibly expansive. They are not only emotional but also instrumental. The starting point for these four works is the music of J.S. Bach, and for Levitt, Bach represents "maximum freedom and imagination, and at the same time great rigor. Levitt chose Bach's outstanding "Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue" in D minor, and combined it with Liszt's "Sonata in B minor," which was looking far into the future at the time of its composition, Busoni's "Counterpoint Fantasy" in the Bach tradition, and Berg's only piano sonata, which Levitt says "intuitively lead-in that feels right"-complemented by four smaller pieces: a piano arrangement by Giloti of the famous aria from Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3, Liszt's transcription of Schubert's song "The Shadow Man," Busoni's "Christmas Night," and Berg's early piano piece in B minor The music was performed by the composer.
