Bernstein's "West Side Story" with the Czech-born tenor Peter Hoffman, who was active mainly in the German theater, and the American soprano Deborah Sasson, who was also Hoffman's wife at the time. Peter Hoffmann was a highly acclaimed Helden tenor for Wagner's works, but he also performed in a wide range of genres, including rock and musicals. With the support of the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas, who would later also record a complete recording, the two singers are perfectly in tune and glorious and brilliant. This ambitious album also includes two songs each from "On the Town" and "Mass."
