Description:
Spain Burns! The "Babi Yar" of unusual power! This is a live recording with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, for which Kazushi Ohno has been music director since September 2015. This is the first recording between the two. The piece is "Babi Yar," a long, heavy, brooding, problematic work with solo voice and chorus. It is very challenging to take up this work in the first season, but the resulting performance is astonishing. Ohno's exceptional ability to deliver a true-to-life performance filled with earnest resonance! Please enjoy the passionate tact of this master musician who continues to make great strides in Japan and abroad. Ohno and the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra bring the dark landscape of "Babi Yar" to life with astonishing vividness and reality. When one thinks of orchestras from southern Europe, one tends to imagine light sounds, refreshing rhythms, and sweet songs, but the orchestra swirls with a powerful force that destroys such preconceived notions with a single blow.In particular, the poignant sound of the third movement "At the Store" and the fourth movement "Terror" and the way the music is carried out are breathtaking. Not only the orchestra, but also the solo singers and the chorus showed unusual expressions of impatience. As Japanese audiences know well, Ohno's music is passionate. However, in this case, the heat is not emitted outward, but rather kept inward, creating an unusual power. (From the liner notes by Mitsutoshi Xu) Kazushi Ohno was born in Tokyo. Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts. Studied piano and composition under Hisayoshi Ando and conducting under Masako Endo. In 1987, he won the first prize at the "Toscanini International Competition for Conductors" in Italy. Since then, he has been enchanting audiences with his opera performances and symphony concerts all over the world. 1990-96 Music Director of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra in Croatia, 1996-2002 General Music Director of the Baden State Opera in Germany, and 2002 Music Director of the Bavarian State Opera. He has been the Music Director of the Royal Opera House of Belgium (Theatre de la Monnaie) from 2002-08, the Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestre Philharmonique Arturo Toscanini in Italy from 2012-15, and the Principal Conductor of the Orchestre National de Lyon in France from 2008-17. Since 2015, he has been Music Director of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra. In opera, he made his debut at La Scala in Milan in June 2007. Since then, he has appeared at the Metropolitan Opera, the Paris Opera, the Bavarian State Opera, the Glyndebourne Festival, and the Aix-en-Provence Festival, among others. He has received numerous awards, including the Akio Watanabe Music Foundation Music Award, the Minister of Education's Art Encouragement Prize for New Artist, the Idemitsu Music Award, the Saito Hideo Memorial Fund Award, the ExxonMobil Music Award, the Suntory Music Award, the Japan Art Academy Award and Imperial Gift Award, and the Asahi Award. He received the Medal with Purple Ribbon.
