Heatmizer was formed in Portland, centered around Elliott Smith and Neil Gust. The Music of Heatmizer, which they released in 1992 prior to their debut album, has been reissued by Third Man Records with 23 additional tracks. In the summer of 1991, Neil Gust and Elliott Smith arrived in Portland, Oregon, along with drummer and producer Tony Lash, and formed a new band. Within a year of bassist Brandt Peterson joining the group, they were performing live throughout the West Coast and had recorded dozens of demos for their first LP. Six of these songs appeared on a self-produced cassette titled The Music of Heatmiser, which was sold at live venues and local record shops and distributed to record labels. Although the band’s sound evolved significantly over the course of three LPs, this can truly be considered Heatmiser’s debut. Innovative, energetic, and brimming with excitement, they incorporated a variety of styles one after another, managing to make ends meet despite financial struggles. This was guitar rock played at full volume through a 100-watt Marshall half-stack, during a time when grunge was at its peak in the Pacific Northwest and Portland’s music scene was exploding. Fast, tight, loud, and fun. Third Man Records is releasing these six original tracks on vinyl and via streaming for the first time. In addition, the release includes 23 bonus tracks, comprising demos, live recordings, rare versions, and previously unreleased songs.
