Chris Cohen, a former member of Deerhoof and an LA-based musician known for his work with Wise Blood and others. Chris Cohen has always been a quiet kid. In fact, this introverted nature was one of the reasons he began playing music as a toddler. The purpose was to communicate without words and to empathize with others without direct verbal expression. This is evidenced by Cohen's work with the large band Deerhoof and his own captivating art-rock act The Curtains, as well as his production and session work with Weyes Blood, Kurt Vile, Le Ren, Marina Allen, and others. But nowhere has Cohen sung more directly than on "Paint a Room," his first album in five years and his debut on Hardly Art. If before he had lurked within the square musical layers he had created on his own, here, for the first time, he is alive and highlighted by a band playing in real time, resonating with new clarity.On the album, Cohen's music feels like a warm spring breeze. On the other hand, it is often heavy, as if blowing from an invisible storm cloud. Paint a Room" reminds us of another reality, one that is at the same time direct and real, where a night walk or a neighbor's wind chime can stir the imagination endlessly and provide a space for the mind to play. The ten songs in the collection clearly present the problem, making us think of new ways to dream our way out of old predicaments. As a result, they dance and sing their way to a new place. On the album, Jeff Parker contributes a tumbling horn arrangement on "Damage," while Parker collaborator Josh Johnson (who produced Meshell Ndegeocello's Grammy-winning album, The Omnichord Real Book") provides flute, saxophone, and clarinet arrangements throughout.
