Description:

With over 60,000 recordings to his credit, the leading scientist in the dub world. London's reggae musicians have come together to release "Direct to Dub"! Engineer, producer, and dub experimenter Scientist has made over 60,000 recordings and is considered one of the most influential figures in the dub world. He is part of the Instigators rhythm section Mafia (bass) and Fluxie (drums), guitarist Tony Lafcutt, vocalist Donovan Kingjay, Jah Shaka keyboardist Greg Assing, and saxophonist Finn Peters, He brought together musicians from London's reggae world to create "Direct to Dub". He spent hours on the kick drum alone, rewired the high-pass EQ on the mixing desk, brought in two 18-inch subwoofers, gathered everyone but Fluxy on drums in the control room, and shook the room with his powerful, clear bass. After setting up the studio perfectly, the group cut six songs, which were then dubbed directly to lacquer by Scientist, bringing his creativity to the forefront. With dub mixing, the engineer becomes the artist, and the engineer performs," explains Scientist, who has nearly 50 years of experience. The album's centerpiece is the lead single, "Missing You," where Scientist strips away the crisp groove and lets Donovan Kingjay's vocals soar. Dubbing horns, guitars, and keyboards with an improvisational flair, Scientist turns his energy to the chorus. It's a master class in tension and release, filtered through Scientist's signature sci-fi dub sound. Surrounded by vintage analog gear and recording directly to disc in a manner similar to his early days of cutting dubs on his King Tabby, Scientist described the experience as a "trip back in time." It opens a new chapter in the extraordinary story of Scientist, who has recorded everything from Sugar Minott to Barrington Levy and released a treasure trove of cult albums under his own name. As this Night Dreamer session proves, without the one and only Scientist, dub would sound very different.
