Featuring a band-led sound with guest musicians, this is his fourth solo album in five years! What Do We Do Now is the first solo album J Mascis has recorded since 1996. This is obviously not a very aggressive release schedule, but considering the live albums, guest spots, and his work in various other bands (Dinosaur Jr., The Fog, Heavy Blanket, Witch, Sweet Apple, etc.), it is, in the words of Lou Reed (Dinosaur Jr., The Fog, Heavy Blanket, Witch, Sweet Apple, etc.), in the words of Lou Reed, "J's week beats your year. What Do We Do Now began to come together during the waning days of the pandemic. Utilizing his own studio, Bisquiteen, J began writing a series of songs on acoustic guitar that had a different dynamic than those he would write for Dinosaur Jr. When I write for the band, I always think about what might suit Lou and Murph. When I'm soloing, I'm thinking more about what I can do with just an acoustic guitar, even lead guitar. Of course, this time I kept the rhythm part acoustic, but added full drums and electric leads. Normally I keep the solo parts simpler so I can play them myself, but I really wanted to add drums. Once that started, everything else fell into place. So it ended up sounding more like a band album. I don't know why I did that, but it happened," he says.Two guest musicians also participate in this year's event. Ken Mauri (of the B52s) from western Massachusetts plays piano on several tracks. The other is Canadian psychedelic/folk/experimental musician Matthew "Doc" Dunn, who J met through Matt Valentine. What Do We Do Now has the greatest set of solo songs J has ever written, and the presentation is perfect. When asked if he will be touring with this album, J said he plans to tour a few weekends, but will not be putting together a band. While you can be sure that these songs will sound great solo or acoustic, the arrangements on the album are really great and add a cool and different element to Mascis' instantly recognizable approach to sound production.
