While remaining faithful to the spirit of Kafka’s unique German text, the Strohs-Uire duo has boldly transformed its specific tonal qualities. Celebrating the simple beauty of cinematic expression, this film has long been quietly cherished by a small circle of intellectual cinephiles as a solitary masterpiece in film history, though opportunities to actually see it have been limited. Although the story is set in America, the dialogue is German, reconstructed from the original text. Filming took place in the summer of 1983 in Hamburg and Bremen. Only the opening scene of the ship entering New York Harbor and the final train scene on the Missouri River were shot in the United States. The beautiful black-and-white cinematography, with its rigorous compositions, is by the master William Lubchanski. Mario Adorf, who plays Karl’s uncle, and Laura Betti, who plays Brunhilde, are renowned actors known for their film roles, but the other major roles are played almost entirely by non-professionals. Christian Heynisch, who played Karl Rothmann, was 16 years old at the time of filming. He is the son of architect Tilman Heynisch, who played Green.
