Presented by the Lauten Company: The World of John Dowland’s Songs, Resounding Across Four Centuries. John Dowland’s (1563–1626) *Songs and Ayres* is known as one of the most representative vocal works of the European Renaissance. Characterized by a unique musical language and refined poetic expression, it delicately portrays a wide range of human emotions, including love, melancholy, joy, and wit. This album, *Behold a Wonder Here*, features a program centered on the five songbooks Dowland published between 1597 and 1612, supplemented by works preserved in contemporary sources. In addition to representative works such as “Come Again,” “Flow My Tears,” and “Time Stands Still,” the album includes the title track, “Behold a Wonder Here,” as well as pieces that are rarely performed today, showcasing the diverse facets of Dowland’s songwriting. The performance features the Lute Company and five singers. Centered around a vocal ensemble, the recording features instruments such as the Renaissance lute, theorbo, Renaissance guitar, cittern, orfalium, viol consort, organ, and harpsichord, weaving together distinct sounds and textures for each piece. Through this core repertoire of English Renaissance songs, this recording offers an opportunity to rediscover the close connection between poetry and music in Dowland’s works, as well as their rich expressive world.
