This is a very interesting coupling of Beethoven's chamber music and the music of his former rival and contemporary Joseph Wölfle (1773-1812), who gained fame in his own time. Wölffl gained fame and recognition in Europe as a pianist and composer during his lifetime, but was unfairly overshadowed by Beethoven, partly due to his untimely death. Almost forgotten, his works have deservedly been reappraised in recent years, with this album featuring Beethoven's two great sonatas for piano and obbligato cello, Op. 5 (Cello Sonatas Nos. 1 and 2), published in 1797 and dedicated to King Friedrich Wilhelm II, Wölfle's Grand Duet, Op.31, published in 1805. Austrian cellist Arne Kircher and antique keyboardist Matthias Klampe, using original instruments from Egidius Klotz 1790 and John Broadwood 1804, present Beethoven's masterpieces and Wölfle's works that are no less fascinating! ...
