Description:

■ Gatefold 2LP, Comes with a beautiful full-color 12-page magazine-format booklet It's finally here! Analog Africa releases a compilation exploring the slowed-down cumbia movement, Lebahada, born from Mexico's Sonidero sound systems! How did the "rebajada" style—playing cumbia records slowed down (necessarily lowering the pitch) using the tempo adjustment function on record players—originate? The prevailing theory goes like this: Two sets of brothers, Pereyas and Ortega, traveled throughout Latin America and brought back a large quantity of records to Mexico. They sold these records to sonideros (mobile DJs) seeking new tunes, but the Colombian records were too fast for Mexican dance steps. So, a sonidero named Sonido Imperial developed a system to slow down the records. That's how Levahada was born. — But that's not actually how it happened. Around the same time in Monterrey, northern Mexico, an electrical short occurred in a sonidero belonging to Gabriel Duenes. This caused the record player to unexpectedly start spinning in slow motion. The resulting cumbia, completely different from the normal tempo, sent the youth into a frenzy. They began begging the sonidero to record the tempo-down cumbia onto tape. Cassettes featuring these slowed-down cumbia and polo tracks were released as bootlegs under the name "Lebajada." This instantly became a movement. This compilation delves into the mystery of Lebahada, the music born from such serendipity, through extensive research and interviews. Notably, it features rare recordings from DJ Lengua—the catalyst for this compilation—rather than Pablo Pereyra, often considered the quintessential sonidero. These recordings are unavailable elsewhere. This compilation is undoubtedly significant not only for DJs but also for the history of Latin American music.
